Seahawks to celebrate 40 years of men's ice hockey

NEWPORT, R.I. --Salve Regina Athletics will honor 40 years of men's ice hockey at the institution with a heritage celebration prior to the team's home game against Nichols College on Saturday, January 27, 2024. 

The program was approved in 1983 and came together for the 1984-85 season as Newport College Hockey Club, coached by Tom Farrea and assisted by Jack Anthony. Farrea coached the team for 14 seasons (1984-1998). Club president, Jim Nelson 85' launched and organized the team during its inaugural season. Both Farrea and Nelson are members of the Salve Regina Athletic Hall of Fame

Prior to Saturday's game at 7 p.m. at the Cabot-Harman Ice Center in Middletown, Rhode Island the institution will honor members of the first team, share a few words about how men's ice hockey was started at Salve Regina and hold a ceremonial puck drop. 

The team invites alumni, current students, faculty, staff and community members to attend the event.

The Seahawks take on the Nichols College Bison for a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup. Going into the evening the Seahawks are 12-4-2 overall and 7-2-2 in the onference. The Bison are currently 4-11-3 overall and 2-6-3 in the CCC.
