WORCESTER, Mass. -- (Saturday, October 26, 2024)-- In their penultimate NEWMAC game of the regular season Salve Regina field hockey fell 5-1 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute after graduate student
Shannon Kennedy tied the game at 1-1 in the second quarter.
The Seahawks emerged in the game at 4:44 into quarter two when
Julia Decker received a pass and sent it to
Shannon Kennedy who netted her 11th goal of 2024 into the net after the opening goal was scored by WPI's Arie Lang.
Engineers' Abbey Powers went on to score her 5th and 6th goals of the season, in addition to Emily Sollecito and Eliza Dutson.

Records: Salve Regina (11-5, 4-4 NEWMAC), WPI (9-6, 6-2 NEWMAC)
History: Salve has a 1-9 record against WPI which began with the 2005 season. Last year the Engineers beat the Seahawks 2-1 at Gaudet Field on senior day. Senior Elizabeth Clark scored early in the contest and prevented the Engineers from getting on the board until just under 20 minutes into the game. With a 1-1 tie the teams entered overtime after scoreless third and fourth periods, but it was WPI who took advantage of the stalemate. WPI's Eliza Dutson scored the game winning goal at the 66:39 minute mark.
NOTEWORTHY:
- WPI elevates to 5-2 in the NEWMAC with their only losses to Babson College and Massachusetts Instiute of Technology.
- Shannon Kennedy and Julia Decker led Salve Regina in shots with four each.
- WPI outshot Salve Regina 19-6.
- Goalie Bryn Protheroe made 14 key saves.

Next Tuesday, October 29, at 6:30 p.m. the Seahawks host the Western New England Golden Bears at Gaudet Field in non-conference play.
