Wiejkus' first two goals of season gives Salve 2-2 draw

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University women's soccer junior Sara Wiejkus scored her first two goals of the season to give the Seahawks a 2-2 with the United States Coast Guard Academy in NEWMAC action at Reynolds Field in Newport, Rhode Island.

The Seahawks came back from a one-goal deficit on two occasions. In the first half, Wiejkus converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute for her first goal of the season. In the 85th minute, Taylor Barnaby lobbed a kick into the box that Wiejkus finished to tie the score once more.

In the final 15 seconds, the Seahawks rattled three potential game winners toward the goal. Marissa Perachi's shot was stopped by Bears keeper Emily Scharnitzky before Faye Fitzpatrick followed with a kick that was blocked to Olivia Tacconi whose last attempt went off the crossbar.

History: Salve Regina and Coast Guard meet for the 17th time for a women's soccer contest, and second time as fellow NEWMAC members. The two programs were fellow CCC members back in 1985.The Bears have an 11-3-3 mark in the all-time series which actually began in 1990. Salve Regina had its biggest win (6-1) in 1992 while Coast Guard returned the favor (6-1) in 2021. In their first-ever NEWMAC meeting in 2023, the teams tied 2-2. Olivia Tacconi and Chase Merrick scored two goals apiece for their respective teams.
