Seahawks blank Vikings 4-0 in first NEHC win

Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. (Friday, November 8, 2024)-- Sophomore Gina Richard's two-goal night was one of several contributing factors in Salve Regina University's 4-0 shutout of Salem State University in the team's opening New England Hockey Conference game.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final
: Salve Regina 4, Salem State 0
Records: Salve Regina (2-1-0, 1-0-0 NEHC), Salem State (1-1-0, 0-1-0 NEHC)
History: The Seahawks beat the Vikings 4-2 last season. Morgan Peritz scored within the first five minutes of the encounter and Riley EspositoEmily Wroblewski and Gina Richard all added in power play goals in the remaining time.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seahawks fired off the most shots of any period in the first 20 minutes of play, however it took both teams some time to settle into their style of play. Sophomore, and 2023-24 team high scorer Gina Richard broke away from Viking defenders and netted her first goal of the night, an unassisted snipe, with less than two minutes to go in the opening period.

With a 1-0 lead, Salve Regina was looking to secure their spot in front and Riley Esposito did just that by taking advantage of a power play opportunity. The Vikings were called on a tripping infraction 26 seconds into period two and Esposito, who received a pass from Richard, accelerated toward the vikings cage and sent the puck over the shoulder of Salem State's Delaney Cox without hesitation. Before period two went in the books Richard tallied her second goal of the season giving the Seahawks a 3-0 lead with 20 minutes left to play.

Returner Emily Wroblewski snapped into action immediately following a face off at 6:14 into the final period and raced down the ice to sink the Seahawks fourth and final goal of the evening.
