Bears survive double-overtime thriller against Seahawks

Seymour (27), Powers (20) pace Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's basketball battled 50 minutes with Bridgewater State University before succumbing in double-overtime, 90-89, in a non-league matchup at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Monday afternoon.

Seahawk junior Sean Seymour led all players with 27 points on 10-of-17 from the floor, including two treys, and 5-of-7 from the line. There were 14 ties and nine lead changes. Three of the four periods were decided by one point with the first overtime period featuring an 11-11 draw.

History: These programs met for the 11th time in men's basketball and first time since the Bears' Classic in 2018. Salve Regina won the contest with Bridgewater State on Friday, November 16, 2018, by a score of 91-81. Kevin Kelly (19), Mikey Spencer (18), Jonathan Friberg (17), and Kevin Mannix (11) led the Seahawks in scoring that game. The following day, Spencer scored 38 points in 37 minutes to lead Salve Regina past Colby-Sawyer. Bridgewater State leads the series, 7-4 (started in 1982).

Dante Kikuba drained a 3-pointer for the Bears but the Seahawks drew even on an old-fashioned three-point play from Sean Seymour. Samuel Omisore had Bridgewater back on top with two from the line before Jojo Powers matched him at 1:06. Both teams exchanged turnovers in the final minute and the Bears worked the ball underneath to Rock who drew contact to go to the line with 0:00.7 on the clock.
