Emerson pulls away for victory at Salve Regina

Officials Appreciation Week

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University women's basketball hosts Emerson College at the Rodgers Recreation Center with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off and a promotional activity beforehand -- the Seahawks and Lions give a big "Thanks!" to their whistle-blowers with commemorative towels during "Officials Appreciation Week."

Six different Lions hit from long range as Emerson made 16 3-pointers during an 87-72 victory and the visitors remained undefeated (4-0) in NEWMAC play while improving to 13-5 overall. Salve Regina (9-8, 2-2 NEWMAC) was led by Sofia Neary who finished with 20 points on 7-of-16 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the line.

History: These programs meet for the 11th time and second as fellow members of the NEWMAC. Briana Neary scored a career-high 38 points on 14 field goals and 10-of-11 from the free throw line as Salve Regina edged Emerson, 92-87, in NEWMAC action at the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym in Boston last year. However, the game-high scorer was Bri Frongillo of the Lions with her 40 points on 13 field goals (five 3-pointers) and nine free throws. Neary matched her career-high last Saturday with 38 points including a school-record 16-for-16 from the free-throw line. Emerson wins for the first time in the series history; Salve Regina leads the series, 10-1.

  • 3Q | Salve Regina won back-to-back periods by one point each. Jessie Silk's 3-pointer put the Cougars up a dozen (53-41) at 7:59 before Ashley Rourke's trey started a 10-0 run for the Seahawks. Rourke added a driving layup and a free throw before Briana Neary made one of two free throws (her first missed attempt since five games ago).   • 4Q | Sofia Neary and Amanda Folan had the first baskets of the final quarter to pull the hosts within five points (64-59). After a Hope Halvarson layup at 7:08 the deficit was only four (67-63). Emerson ended the quarter on a 20-9 run with 3-pointers from Kendra Dodd (2), Bri Frongillo, Sofia Canter, and Elise Arnold. NOTEWORTHY
  • Seahawk captains Amanda Folan, Olivia Martin, Briana Neary, and Ashley Rourke presented tonight's officials -- Ron Bouchard, Jenna Buffi, Roger Saraiva -- with "Officials Appreciation Week" towels.
  • Briana Neary had a streak of 30-consecutive free throws made come to an end in the second half. Over a four-game stretch, Neary made 30 straight from the charity stripe including a school-record 16-for-16 against Babson last Saturday.
  • Both teams recorded 32 points in the paint.
  • Four Seahawks finished in double figure scoring -- Sofia Neary (20), Amanda Folan (15), Briana Neary (11), and Ashley Rourke (10).
  • Salve Regina edged Emerson on the boards, 40-to-38.
  • Salve Regina outscored Emerson from the free throw line, 17 to 5, and made 81.0% of its attempts from the charity stripe (17-for-21).
ON THE HORIZON
Salve Regina goes on the road to play at #7 Smith on Saturday, February 1, 2025, with a 2 p.m. tip-off on FloCollege. The Seahawks fell to the Pioneers last year at home, 71-43, before Smith finished as the national runner-up.
