NEWPORT, R.I. --
Carah Leclair (Bellingham, Mass.) scored 15 minutes into the home Salve Regina University women's soccer game against NEWMAC rival Smith College on Saturday, however the Bears found the back of the net on a penalty kick at the 66th minute to tie it 1-1, which held throughout the encounter.
Salve Regina and the NEWMAC honored WPI women's soccer head coach Steph Riley-Schafer, who has been battling colon cancer for a few years now, with a "Blue Game" to raise funds and bring awareness for colon cancer research. The Engineers women's soccer team launched a fundraiser benefiting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and
donations can be made here. Any contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference.
"We're raising awareness on our campus about colon cancer screening and prevention, particularly for young adults," stated WPI women's soccer captain Fiona Prendergast. "Coach Steph was only 30 when she was diagnosed, which is a reminder that this disease doesn't discriminate by age. If sharing our story encourages even one person to get screened early, it could save a life."
