LAS VEGAS - In the first ever meeting in women's basketball between Amherst College and Salve Regina University, the 15th-ranked Mammoths held the Seahawks scoreless for nearly the first seven minutes and coasted to a 61-47 victory in the 15th Annual D3hoops.com Classic hosted at South Point Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Salve Regina enjoyed a 14-10 edge in the third quarter and the teams both scored 16 points in the fourth quarter.
Senior captain
Sofia Neary (Wayne, N.J.) led all players on the scoreboard and off the boards with a double-double (18 points, 13 rebounds) for Salve Regina (4-6, 0-0 NEWMAC). Neary's baseline jumper at 3:52 in the fourth made it a single-digit deficit, 51-42.
Sylvia Liddle and
Chase Anderson had identical scoresheets for the Mammoths (7-1, 0-0 NESCAC) with 10 points and 10 rebounds apiece.
Anna Tranum led Amherst with 13 points.
The teams combined to shoot less than 12 percent from long range -- Amherst made just 3-of-25 and Salve Regina got its only triple (1-of-9) on the only field goal attempt from
Liz McGuirl (Ellington, Conn.) with 4:29 to go in the game.
