Coast Guard sinks Salve Regina by four, 72-68

Seymour nets 27 for game-high points

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Salve Regina University men's basketball battled into the final minute but ultimately lost by four, 72-68, at the United States Coast Guard Academy in NEWMAC action at Roland Hall on Wednesday evening in New London, Connecticut.

Sean Seymour led all players with 27 points on 9-for-19 from the floor including three threes and 6-of-6 from the line. The Seahawk loss places them in a four-way tie at 6-9 in the league with the Bears of Coast Guard, Emerson College, and Wheaton College. Salve Regina split with the former and the latter in the regular season and finishes with Emerson College at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. A Seahawk win on Saturday could vault Salve Regina into a fourth-place finish.

History: These programs meet for the 31st time in men's basketball and fourth time as fellow NEWMAC members. As charter members of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (now Conference of New England), Salve Regina and Coast Guard met 14 times in the 1980s when the Bears enjoyed an 11-3 mark in the series. After just two meetings in the 1990s (1990, 1991), the series resumed in 2011. Since 1990, Salve Regina leads the series, 10-7; Coast Guard has the overall edge, 18-13. Last year, the teams split their NEWMAC contests, each winning on the other's home court. This year's split featured home team winning both games.
