SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Tuesday, May 1, 2025)-- The No. 4 seed Salve Regina University (12-6) men's lacrosse relented 15-9 to the No. 1 seed Springfield College (10-6) in the NEWMAC Tournament Semifinal on the road on a warm evening at the Pride's home Stagg Field.
Springfield claimed the opening face off and quickly potted their first goal of the evening off the stick of Riley Burgmyer. After nearly running out the possession clock Heath Sumwalt's shot from the slot tied it up and Daniel Naglieri added in at the 8:17 mark to give the Seahawks their first lead of the game. Before the quarter ended Sumwalt found the back of the net yet again to put Salve Regina ahead 3-1.
Liam Cooney started the second quarter off strong for Salve Regina with a goal from up high after receiving a pass from Daniel Naglieri behind the net which made it 4-1. Springfield's Bryan Stensrud and Mason Nocito, with two goals, brought it back to a tied game with six minutes to go in the first half. The Seahawks' 4-0 run was met with a 3-0 comeback by the host. Chris Koltzen, of the Seahawks and Brady Soldo of the Pride added in to ensure a knotted 6-6 game at the half.
Springfield began the second half with a nine goal run, giving the Pride the momentum they needed to take control of the game. Going into the final quarter Springfield led 14-5.
The Seahawks found the back of the net before the buzzer sounded when Aidan McIntyre, Justin DeBalsi, Connor McNaughton and Grant Willoe scored in the final four minutes of the contest. It wasn't quite enough for the visitor to pull even and the hosting Pride claimed a 15-9 victory.
Seahawk face off specialist Justin Haverly went 9-23 at center field. Goalie Andrew Hazard made an outstanding 21 saves.
On April 19, when the teams recently met during the regular season Salve Regina fell to Springfield 10-8. Pride's Kevin Tierney and Riley Burgmyer elevated the visitor over the host after the game was tied 8-8 going into the final quarter.
Tonight's result advances Springfield to the NEWMAC Tournament Finals on Saturday, April 3. Salve Regina men's lacrosse ends their 2025 season with a winning record of 12-6.
