Homa drives in Grover with walk-off base hit

NEWMAC Championships - Game 3 | No. 1 Salve Regina 3, No. 5 Wheaton 2

NEWPORT, R.I. (Thursday, May 8, 2025) -- Salve Regina University graduate student Christian Homa singled in fellow graduate student Brandon Grover with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the top-seeded Seahawks, ranked 10th in the nation (D3baseball.com), to a 3-2 finish against fifth-seeded Lyons of Wheaton College in NEWMAC Championships action at Reynolds Field on Thursday afternoon.

The win advances Salve Regina (30-7, 13-3 NEWMAC) to a match up with second-seeded Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon after the Bears survived on a wild pitch walk-off win (5-4) in extra inning against third-seeded MIT today. The Lyons (22-18, 9-7 NEWMAC) will face the Engineers in an elimination game on Saturday morning at Reynolds Field.

Today in Newport, the visitors got on the board first. After Seahawk starter Kyle Carozza set down the first nine Lyons in order with seven Ks in three innings, Tommy Beauregard led off the fourth with a double to right field and moved to third on a sacrifice by Robbie Lamond. Carozza got two more strikeouts but not before Timmy Wagner added his team-leading 63rd RBI with a single to right field.

Wheaton starting pitcher Greg Strite retired the first two Seahawks he faced in the fourth with a 1-0 lead before Wil McCarthy singled and Shane Williams followed with a two-run blast to center field.

Both teams went scoreless over innings five through eight. Jason Arrigo retired the first nine batters he faced and opened the ninth ready to face the 3-4-5 batters in the Lyons' lineup. Casey Wensley, who had struck out in his first three at-bats (twice against Carozza and once against Arrigo), homered to right field (his sixth of the season) to tie the score. Andrew Wertz (W, 2-0) walked the first Lyon batter he faced before striking out the next three to set up the Seahawks for a walk-off opportunity.

Liam Goldthwaite (L, 1-5) got the first two outs in the bottom of the ninth on a strike three swinging and a fly ball to right. Brandon Grover worked a two-out base on balls on five pitches and stole second to move into scoring position. Christian Homa fought off several pitches with foul balls before lacing a single to left field.
