Seahawks top Privateers, 28-20, in NEWMAC opener

Salve Regina remains undefeated heading into matchup at Springfield

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University football scored a touchdown in each quarter en route to a 28-20 win over visiting Privateers of SUNY Maritime College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Toppa Field in Newport, Rhode Island. Justan Luzzi (Belleville, N.J.) rushed for 155 yards and caught the first of four TD passes from Thomas Fallon (Freehold, N.J.). Fallon finished with 17 completions on 30 attempts for 182 yards passing including touchdown strikes to Luzzi (14 yards), Kyle Crampton (Merrimack, N.H.) (7 yards), and Spencer Chapman (Needham, Mass.) (41 and 10 yards).

James Minotti (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) led the Seahawks in tackles with eight, including five solo, and also had an interception.

The Seahawks improve to 4-0 overall and start their NEWMAC slate with a victory for the third straight season. Salve Regina won the coin toss and deferred to the second half while SUNY Maritime ran six plays on its first series before the Seahawks blocked a punt to take over at the Privateer 27-yard line. Gaining one yard on his first three snaps, Fallon converted a 4th-and-9 with a 12-yard run and then later on 2nd-and-7 from the 14, he found Luzzi uncovered on the right at the 10 and the senior running back took to the pylon.

Will Pickett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had a couple of completions to Nate Casaburi (Sayville, N.Y.) that gained 36 yards on the next Privateer possession. Pickett later plunged into the end zone on a three-yard run up the middle to get Maritime on the board. Salve Regina special teams had its second blocked kick of the afternoon and Dylan DeAngelis (Duxbury, Mass.) returned it the other way, but a penalty nullified the two-point conversion for the Seahawks.

Luzzi, Fallon, and Christopher Molina (Pawtucket, R.I.) gained ground yardage before the end of the first quarter, which also included a 7-yard pass play to Crampton. To start the second quarter, Fallon aired it out to Ethan Lemos (Wethersfield, Conn.) for 24 yards to the Privateer 8-yard line. Fallon found Crampton over the middle for the second touchdown.

Joshua Rogers (Valley Stream, N.Y.), who gained 144 yards on 23 carries, ran 51 yards for the touchdown that brought the Privateers within two, 14-12. After a false start penalty pushed the Privateers back to the eight-yard line, Pickett completed a pass on the two-point conversion attempt, but the Seahawks stopped the ball at the five.

After a false start penalty on its first drive of the second half put Salve Regina at the Maritime 41-yard line with a 1st-and-15, Fallon went deep to Chapman who hauled in the touchdown for a 20-12 lead. Chapman had his second TD grab in the fourth quarter and after Nathan DiRado's (Carver, Mass.) fourth PAT kick, the Seahawks were up, 28-12.

Matt Ollen's (Floral Park, N.Y.) 27-yard pass reception and Pickett to Josh Limage (Valley Stream, N.Y.) on the conversion made it a one-score margin in the final two-plus minutes. Chris Stowell (Newtown, Conn.) had a key pick to ice the game.
