Seahawks score first-ever win over Cougars

Salve Regina def. Clark, 70-55; Seahawks improve to 3-0 in NEWMAC

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University men's basketball made over 55 percent of its field goal attempts to score a 15-point win (70-55) over the visiting Cougars of Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. Jack Margoupis (Sutton, Mass.) led all players with 20 points on 8-of-15 from the floor while three other Seahawks (10-2, 3-0 NEWMAC) posted double-digit points -- Pat Spenard (Rochester, Mass.) and Sean Seymour (Albany, N.Y.) both finished with 15 and Domenic Malvey (Newton, N.H.) added 10.

The Cougars (7-6, 2-2 NEWMAC), who came into the game 11-0 all-time against the Seahawks in a series that began in 1984, were led by a pair that scored a dozen points each -- sophomore Boluwasefe John (Corona, N.Y.) and senior Reid Neumann (Burbank, Calif.).

SUMMARY
  • 1H | In front of a spirited crowd at the Rodgers Recreation Center, Salve Regina seized control early and never relinquished momentum in the opening half of Saturday's NEWMAC matchup. The Seahawks jumped out of the gate with crisp execution on offense. Domenic Malvey and Pat Spenard provided the initial scoring punch, converting inside opportunities that helped Salve Regina build an early advantage. Clark battled back with timely buckets from Reid Neumann and Boluwasefe John, keeping the Cougars within striking distance. But Salve Regina's balanced attack and stout half-court defense gradually tilted the game in their favor. Salve Regina shot efficiently in the first frame, tallying 13 made field goals on 26 attempts while containing Clark to just 20 points. Although the Cougars found success from deep at times, the Seahawks' ability to score in the paint and control the glass — out-scoring Clark in second-chance opportunities — gave them a 9-point edge at halftime. | Seahawks 29, Cougars 20
  • 2H | Salve Regina came out of the locker room with renewed intensity to open the second half, quickly extending its lead by mixing controlled offense with crucial defensive stops. Clark showed resilience early in the period — connecting on a series of shots that cut into the deficit — but the Seahawks responded with consistent scoring from multiple players. Jack Margoupis led the way with a team-high 20 points, while Sean Seymour and Pat Spenard each chipped in 15 points, keeping the Clippers' offense off balance and limiting Clark's opportunities to regain momentum. Salve Regina's defense tightened in the second half, forcing turnovers and contesting shots effectively. Despite improved shooting from Clark after intermission — including a more accurate performance from beyond the arc — the Cougars couldn't overcome a growing gap. The Seahawks maintained a double-digit lead for much of the final 20 minutes, eventually cruising to a 15-point victory. Clark's effort was highlighted by two 12-point performances from Neumann and John, but overall shooting struggles and Salve Regina's balanced scoring output proved decisive. | Seahawks 41, Cougars 35
NOTEWORTHY

  • Spenard and Pridgen led their respective teams with seven rebounds each, all on the defensive glass.

QUOTABLE SEAHAWKS

"Our staff is proud of the way our guys are competing right now. Clark is a tough team that presents issues with their pressure and athleticism. Our guys responded well today from an execution standpoint and we need to continue playing for each other and strive for improving daily." -- Salve Regina head coach Sean Foster '97
