Seahawks overcome double-digit deficit for road victory

Five in double figures for Salve Regina led by Sean Seymour's 18 points

WESTFIELD, Mass. (Saturday, January 3, 2026) -- Salve Regina University (8-2) men's basketball rallied from down a dozen at Westfield State University (8-3) and secured a 71-65 road victory behind five Seahawks in double figure scoring, led by Sean Seymour's (Albany, N.Y.) 18 points.

Seymour's 3-pointer from the corner got the scoring started in the second half. Off the bench, Zavier Francoeur (Canton, Mass.) contributed 11 points (all in the second half) on five-of-seven from the floor including a 3-pointer.

Salve Regina trailed by 12 (49-37) before Domenic Malvey (Newton, N.H.) drilled a triple after head coach Sean Foster '97 called a timeout. Francoeur followed from long range and then a layup to produce an 8-0 run for the Seahawks. Jack McMullen's (East Greenwich, R.I.) three-point play on a give-and-go inbounds' pass brought the Seahawks within one (62-61).

Seymour's jumper from the elbow gave Salve Regina its first lead since the opening 20 minutes and then Francoeur's layup put the Seahawks up for good at 2:46 (65-64). Pat Spenard's (Rochester, Mass.) hook shot in the paint created a cushion after their next possession.

SUMMARY
  • 1H | The first half was firmly controlled by the Westfield State Owls, who quickly built a substantial lead and capitalized on Salve Regina's cold shooting. Salve Regina opened with a quick 3-pointer from Sean Seymour, but the Owls responded with consistent scoring and efficient ball movement. Westfield State's offense, driven by strong play from Kenney Rogers and Joe Thomson, managed to maintain a lead that stretched into double digits for much of the period. While Salve Regina's overall shooting percentage remained low at 37.5%, the Seahawks stayed in the game by shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line, preventing the deficit from ballooning further. Despite solid rebounding from Pat Spenard, Salve Regina entered the locker room trailing by nine points, 35-26, facing a significant challenge to overcome the momentum established by Westfield State. | OWLS 35, SEAHAWKS 26
  • 2H | Salve Regina mounted a spectacular comeback in the second half, completely flipping the script with highly efficient offense and tough defense. The Seahawks dramatically improved their shooting, hitting 52.9% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc. A key early run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Domenic Malvey and Zavier Francoeur's scoring off the bench, quickly eroded Westfield State's 12-point lead, which was their largest of the game. Francoeur provided a crucial spark with 11 second-half points, while Sean Seymour added 10 points and became a consistent threat. Salve Regina's defense also clamped down, holding the Owls to just 30 points in the half. The Seahawks flawlessly executed at the free-throw line (5-for-5) once again, allowing them to pull ahead in the final minutes and secure the thrilling 71-65 victory. | SEAHAWKS 45, OWLS 30

QUOTABLE SEAHAWKS
"Our staff is really proud of our group's resilience in the second half. We didn't panic when we were down 12. We focused on protecting the paint, we were able to get multiple stops, took much better shots, and stayed connected. These players are really bought into playing together led by our upperclassmen. No one tried to do it alone, we stayed confident and competed possession by possession to secure a solid road win." -- Seahawk head coach Sean Foster '97
