Interrante lifts Seahawks above Engineers in second OT

WORCESTER, Mass. — Reese Interrante delivered a dramatic game-winning goal in double overtime to lift Salve Regina University field hockey to a 1-0 NEWMAC victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon at H. Carr Field.

The Seahawks (8-6, 2-4 NEWMAC) battled through four scoreless quarters and a first overtime period before Interrante broke through at 74:06 to secure the hard-fought road victory over the Engineers (7-7, 4-2 NEWMAC).

With the game still scoreless in the second overtime, Interrante capitalized on an opportunity by stealing the ball past a defender and firing it into the net for her fourth goal of the season. The decisive play capped a determined effort from the Seahawks, who remained composed throughout a tightly contested matchup.

Goalkeeper Siany Ortez anchored Salve Regina's defensive performance, recording seven saves across 74:06 of action to earn the shutout. Ortez and the Seahawks' defense stood firm against WPI's offensive pressure, keeping the Engineers off the scoreboard despite facing 14 shots and 11 penalty corners.

Salve Regina generated six shots, including three during the second overtime period. Jordyn Pineau led the Seahawks with three shots, putting one on target, while Adelaide Baird added another attempt.

The Seahawks also demonstrated their resilience on the defensive end, weathering WPI's pressure through regulation and the first overtime before finding the breakthrough in the second extra period.
