WORCESTER, Mass. — The Salve Regina University field hockey team battled through a back-and-forth NEWMAC contest Tuesday night, rallying twice before Jordyn Pineau's penalty-stroke goal in overtime lifted the Seahawks to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Clark University at Granger Field.
Salve Regina ended up in an early hole after Clark opened the scoring just 5:04 into the contest. The Seahawks answered before halftime, with Elliot Lund finding the back of the cage to send the teams into the break tied at 1-1.
Lund struck again early in the third quarter, putting Salve ahead 2-1. Pineau provided the assist on the go-ahead goal as the Seahawks continued to pressure the Clark defense.
Clark answered with ten minutes to go in regulation, forcing overtime. Salve, however, continued to generate opportunities and eventually earned the decisive chance. With just 37 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Pineau converted a penalty stroke at 62:07 to send the Seahawks home with the victory.
Salve controlled the offensive flow throughout the night, finishing with a commanding 48-8 advantage in shots and a 15-3 edge in penalty corners. The Seahawks also put 22 shots on target, forcing Clarks goalkeeper to make 19 saves.
Pineau led the offensive charge with 18 shots, five on goal, a goal and an assist. Lund added two goals on five shots, while Adelaide Baird recorded six shots and four shots on goal. Molly Kearney added five shots with four on target, and Grace Warnick registered three shots and two shots on goal.
Siany Ortez anchored the Seahawks in goal, making three saves over 62:07 while keeping Salve within striking distance during Clark's two scoring stretches.
