INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Salve Regina 81, Coast Guard 55
Records: Salve Regina (17-6, 10-4 NEWMAC), Coast Guard (7-16, 3-12 NEWMAC)
History: These programs meet for the 33rd time in men's basketball and sixth time as fellow NEWMAC members. As charter members of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (now Conference of New England), Salve Regina and Coast Guard met 14 times in the 1980s when the Bears enjoyed an 11-3 mark in the series. After just two meetings in the 1990s (1990, 1991), the series resumed in 2011. Since 1990, Salve Regina leads the series, 11-7; Coast Guard has the overall edge, 18-14. Last year, the teams split their NEWMAC contests, each winning on their home court. This is the first season sweep for either team in league play.
SUMMARY
- 1H | From the opening tip at Roland Hall, Salve Regina asserted control and dictated tempo in the first 20 minutes. After Coast Guard struck first with an early jumper, the Seahawks responded quickly — senior guard Sean Seymour knifed to the rim for the first Salve points, and Domenic Malvey followed with a smooth scoring drive to put the hosts ahead. Salve's offense found balance early, with Malvey, Jack McMullen, Seymour and Pat Spenard contributing buckets that helped the Seahawks stay ahead even as Coast Guard countered with timely perimeter shooting — including a trio from Elijah Parent. By midway through the period, Salve Regina's lead grew larger as the Seahawks mixed inside scoring and transition opportunities. A key burst in the late first quarter — capped by fastbreak scores and back-to-back triples from Malvey and Spenard — stretched the advantage into double digits. At the break, Salve Regina carried a 42–26 lead, having shot efficiently (over 50% from the floor) while holding the Bears to only modest offensive production. | SEAHAWKS 42, BEARS 26
- 2H | Coming out of halftime, Salve maintained momentum. Spenard opened with an emphatic layup, and the Seahawks continued to find open looks against a Coast Guard defense matching effort but struggling to contain penetration and perimeter shots. Throughout the period, the Bears tried to chip into the deficit with occasional 3-pointers and a pair of fastbreak layups by Jordan Frazer and Walker Corbin, but each Coast Guard push was answered by Salve's balanced offense. The Seahawks consistently punished turnovers and converted on quick transitions, keeping a comfortable separation. As the second half progressed, the pace of scoring favored Salve Regina. McMullen's timely triples and strong interior finishes from Seymour and Malvey ensured the lead remained well in hand. Even when Coast Guard briefly narrowed the margin (to roughly 12 points midway), the Seahawks re-asserted control with a series of baskets and free throws. Salve closed the half with poised execution, extending the margin and finishing 81–55. The Seahawks shot over 53% for the game and shared scoring contributions across starters, while Coast Guard was led by Parent's 14 points in defeat. | SEAHAWKS 39, BEARS 29
