WASHINGTON — The #5/#9 Salve Regina University Seahawks unleashed a potent offensive attack Sunday afternoon, pounding out a 15-1 victory over Montclair State University Red Hawks in non-league action at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
Salve Regina (now 4-1) plated eight runs in the first inning and never looked back, rallying for a dominant performance that saw the Seahawks score in three separate innings while blanking Montclair State for six frames. The Seahawks improved to 4-1 on the early season, while the Red Hawks dropped to 4-2.
Seahawks Set Tone Early
The offensive barrage began in the first inning. After a leadoff double by Jake Harring (Portsmouth, N.H.), Shea Donovan (Milton, Mass.) delivered a run-scoring single. That was followed by a towering grand slam from Shane Williams (Georgetown, Mass.), his second roundtripper of the season, that drove in four and put Salve Regina ahead 5-0 instantly. The offensive onslaught continued with another Donovan RBI via the walk, and two more runs coming across on a Montclair State error — giving Salve Regina an 8-0 lead before the Red Hawks recorded their first out.
Sustained Offense
In the second inning, Jake Harring added to the lead with an RBI single that scored Williams, extending the advantage to 9-0. Salve Regina tacked on five more runs in the third inning — capped by a two-RBI double from James Anastasopoulos (Sherburn, Mass.) and an RBI groundout by Donovan — giving the Seahawks a commanding 14-0 lead.
Montclair State's lone run came in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Lukas Egenhause (Suffern, N.Y.) that scored Vinny Agnello (Howell, N.J.) and cut the deficit to 14-1. The Seahawks added one more in the sixth, with Williams reaching on a fielder's choice and Andrew Schmit (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scoring on a throwing error to make it 15-1.
Statistical Standouts
Shane Williams was dominant at the plate, going 5-for-5 with five RBIs and scoring three runs, including his big first-inning blast.
Shea Donovan chipped in with a multi-RBI day, finishing 3-for-?? with three runs batted in and multiple free passes.
Salve Regina touched every part of the lineup, finishing with 12 hits and drawing seven walks to put constant pressure on Montclair's pitching staff.
Pitching and Defense
On the mound, starter Kyle Carozza (Fairfield, Conn.) earned the win, going four innings and allowing just two hits with four strikeouts. Relievers Dominic Carollo (West Warwick, R.I.), Luis Ortiz Ramirez (East Boston, Mass.), and Brady Shea (Worcester, Mass.) helped close out the game, combining to give up one earned run over three innings of relief (though Montclair's error-ridden defense contributed five total miscues).
Montclair State managed just five hits and struggled to generate sustained offense, leaving four runners on base and falling well short of mounting a comeback.
