NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Salve Regina University women's track and field team made the trip to Connecticut College this weekend for the Silfen Invitational, and it turned out to be one of the best weekends of the season for the program. The team recorded 11 personal bests and a handful of season bests across the two days of competition.
The weekend got off to a strong start on the track Friday, where junior
Isabella Hastings broke the school record in the Elite Women's 5000 meters with a time of 18:04.57, bettering the previous mark by three seconds. Notably, the record was set at this same meet last season, making it a special moment for Hastings on a familiar stage.
On Saturday, junior
Olivia Tacconi had a standout day in the sprints. She ran a wind-aided 12.39 seconds in the preliminary round of the 100 meter dash before securing an official school record with a wind-legal 12.49 in the finals, good enough for third place. Tacconi also finished fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.66 seconds. Senior
Meena Goswami added a personal best of her own in the 100 meters, crossing the line in 12.83 seconds. Freshman
Hannah Tadros won her heat of the 800 meters, and sophomore
Sophia Molfetto took second in the long jump with a personal best mark of 5.23 meters.
In the throws, freshman
Gianna Stanley placed fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 39.44 meters on Saturday. Fellow freshmen
Dylan Phelps and
Maya Sepulveda both set personal bests in the hammer throw as well, with Phelps throwing 27.82 meters and Sepulveda reaching 18.24 meters. Sepulveda capped off a big weekend by also setting a personal best in the discus with a mark of 28.58 meters and qualifying for her first career finals appearance in the event.
"All told it was a really encouraging weekend for the program," said head coach
Andrew Furst.
The Seahawks are back in action next Saturday, April 18, at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.
