NEWPORT, R.I. (April 12, 2026) -- No. 4-ranked Salve Regina University baseball senior outfielder
Shane Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) went opposite field for his third home run of the week and eighth of the season, a three-run blast in the seventh, and fellow classmate and designated hitter
Brady Smolinski (North Grafton, Mass.) had a bases-loaded walk that drove in the final run of a 15-5 shortened victory (seven innings) over visiting Curry College in non-league action at Brother Michael Reynolds Field in Newport, Rhode Island, on Sunday afternoon.
Four seniors finished with multiple RBI for the Seahawks (23-2) -- three each for
Shea Donovan (Milton, Mass.) and Smolinski while Williams and
Evan O'Rourke (Arlington, Mass.) drove in five and two, respectively. Sophomore
Danny Rogers (New Canaan, Conn.) had the other run batted in for Salve Regina, which won its 10th straight game for its second double-figure win streak of the season.
Four Seahawk hurlers worked on the mound against the Colonels (6-14) -- starter
Carrick Ryan (Durham, N.C.), followed by relievers
Joe DeRienzo (Trumbull, Conn.),
James Keating (Norwood, N.J.), and
Liam Scholl (Brunswick, Maine). Scholl earned his first collegiate victory (W, 1-0) as the Seahawks rallied from a 5-4 deficit with two in the fifth, four in the sixth, and five in the seventh -- the biggest blow coming from Williams.
Donovan put the Seahawks on the board in the first as he followed
Jake Harring's (Portsmouth, N.H.) lead off single with a triple down the left field line. The Colonels tied it up their next at bat when
Cooper Salter (San Jose, Calif.) singled down the right field line to score
Blake Fuller (Providence, R.I.).
Donovan and Williams both had RBI singles in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 Seahawk advantage.
Jorge Rodriguez (Sarasota, Fla.) and
Brandon Mantilla-Mercado (Stoughton, Mass.) scampered home for a pair of unearned runs in the Colonel third before
Ryan Murphy (Cheshire, Conn.) singled to shortstop in the fourth to tie the game and then
Taylor Diaz's (Oceanside, Calif.) RBI ground out gave Curry its only (short-lived) lead in the fifth.
Smolinski's two-run single in the fifth that put the Seahawks on top to stay came with two outs and an 0-2 count on the Salve Regina captain.
A new Colonel pitcher opened the Seahawk sixth by hitting
James Anastasopoulos (Sherborn, Mass.) and walking the top of the order - Harring, Donovan, Williams - for a 7-5 score. O'Rourke greeted a new Curry reliever with a two-run single. Rogers added his sacrifice fly for a 10-5 lead heading into what would be the final frame. Like he did in the sixth, Scholl got two quick outs before allowing a base hit (double for T. Diaz), and then retired the fourth batter.
Anastasopoulos doubled to open the Seahawk seventh. Harring was hit by a pitch, and then a failed pickoff play allowed Anastasopoulos to score and Harring moved to third. Donovan walked on a 3-2 pitch before Williams hit the homer to lift his season RBI total to a team and NEWMAC-best 44. O'Rourke,
Andrew Schmit (Shrewsbury, Mass.), and
Elliot Hamilton (Glastonbury, Mass.) singled to load the bases before Smolinski's walk-off walk.
The Seahawks have reached double-figure runs in 15 of their 25 games this season and their mercy rule decisions reached seven with today's final.
Salve Regina completes its regular season series with Babson College on the road on Tuesday and then travels to Rhode Island College on Thursday before hosting Springfield College on Sautrday in a NEWMAC twinbill that will also feature Senior Day for a dozen Seahawks.
