Seahawks fall to Bears in NEWMAC first round

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Salve Regina women's lacrosse relented 12-5 to the hosting United States Coast Guard Academy Bears in the NEWMAC Tournament first round on Saturday.

Nora Cooney took advantage of an early player-up advantage to score the first goal of the game. Madison Maire followed suite with a second goal for the Seahawks with 6:03 to go in the first quarter. The Bears were quick to strike back to pot the next four goals before Maire was able to find the back of the net again and shift the momentum.

The Seahawks went into the second half trailing slightly, 5-3. The turning point of the encounter came in the third quarter when the Bears went on a scoring run to establish a 9-3 lead. Cooney and Alix Madden put a stop to the Bears second-half push, but the final three goals of the game, fired off from the host, solidified Coast Guard's lead.
