Seahawks lose to Hawks, Chargers

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team remains undefeated in The Commonwealth Coast Conference after a pair of wins Saturday afternoon in a TCCC tri-match, as the Hawks defeated Salve Regina University 3-1 and Colby-Sawyer College 3-1. In the middle match, Colby-Sawyer also picked up a 3-1 win over Salve Regina.

 

In the Salve Regina match, Roger Williams dominated the first game, cruising to a 25-6 victory. The Seahawks fared better in the second game, but still fell 18-25 to Roger Williams. Salve Regina would make adjustments in the third game and come away with the 25-21 victory, yet Roger Williams put away the Seahawks in the third game 25-18.

 

The Hawks Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) led all with 17 kills while hitting an impressive .556 in the match. Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) had 18 assists while Sarah DeVries (Dover Plains, N.Y.) handed out 15 of her own. Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) had 15 digs to go along with a service ace.

 

Junior Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) led Salve Regina with eight kills, while sophomore Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished with a game-high 19 digs. Senior Lisa Zabel (Madison, Conn.) finished with a solid all-around effort with 13 assists, eight digs, three kills, and two service aces.

 

The second match of the day saw Salve Regina looking to give Colby-Sawyer its first conference loss of the year. Colby-Sawyer jumped out to a 1-0 lead, taking the first game 25-20 before the Seahawks knotted the score at one apiece with a 25-23 win. The Chargers won the next set 25-21 before escaping with a 28-26 win in a thrilling fourth set. Colby-Sawyer rallied from a 24-21 deficit before coming away with the match victory.

 

Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.) tallied 22 kills for Colby-Sawyer to go along with 18 digs. Kristin Sawyer (Walpole, Mass.) finished with 49 assists, while Stef Turner (Boxborough, Mass.) chipped in with 12 kills. Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.) added seven kills, 12 digs, and four service aces, with Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass.) digging out a game-high 27 balls.

 

For Salve Regina, freshman Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) had 19 kills along with 20 digs. Zabel finished with 23 assists and 13 digs, while Barry and freshman Christine Narvaez (Ridgewood, N.J.) added eight kills each. Clancy led Salve Regina in digs with 25.

 

With the stage set in the third match for a battle of TCCC unbeatens, Roger Williams struck first, taking the first game 25-22. Colby-Sawyer would make a comeback in the second game and tie the match at one with a win by the same score, this time in their favor. In the third game, the Hawks ended the game on a 10-3 run to come away with the 25-15 win. In the fourth game, strong play on both sides led to a tight matchup, with neither team leading by more than two points over most of the match. In the end, Roger Williams pulled away, closing out the match on a 6-2 run to break a 19-19 tie and move to 5-0 in the TCCC the fourth-set 25-21 win.

 

Four Hawks reached double figures in kills, including Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) with 14, Dion with 12, Marybeth Torpey with 11, and Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) with ten. Emily Lebowitz handed out a season-high 46 assists in the match, while Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) finished with 30 digs and three service aces.

 

Turner led Colby-Sawyer with 12 kills, three service aces, and three block assists, with Sawyer going for 27 assists. Le-Bruno finished with 24 digs, while Doody and O'Hara had 15 and 10 digs, respectively.

 

Roger Williams (16-3, 5-0 TCCC) hosts Regis College Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. with Salve Regina (4-11, 2-2 TCCC) taking on Eastern Nazarene College and Colby-Sawyer (10-7, 4-1 TCCC) playing Endicott College at the same time and date.
