Seahawks soar past Daniel Webster, 6-3

Box Score

Newport, R.I. – Sophomore Sarah Bambury (Fairport, N.Y.) tallied a goal and an assist as the Salve Regina University field hockey team doubled-up Daniel Webster College 6-3 in non-conference action Wednesday night at Gaudet Field to earn its first win of the season.

Eight different Seahawks (1-9) registered a point in a win which saw them outshoot the Eagles 32-13 on the evening. The loss drops the Eagles, who are in their third-year as a varsity athletic program, to 2-2 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the contest when freshman Sierra Ackerman (Saratoga, Calif.) picked up her third goal of the season. The Seahawks then reeled off the next five goals to grab a 5-1 lead early in the second half.

Senior co-captain Brittany Lopes (Lexington, Mass.) got the Seahawks on the board with her third marker of 2010 at 19:50 to tie the game at one. Salve Regina then grabbed a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish when Bambery potted her third of the season just 55 seconds later. Freshman Alexa Bracco (Hauppauge, N.Y.) picked up her first collegiate goal at 29:48 that pushed the Seahawks lead to 3-1, and sophomore Kylie Kenney (South Burlington, Vt.) chalked up her first-career goal less than three minutes later at 32:06 to make it 4-1 in favor of SRU. The half ended with the Seahawks outshooting the Eagles 19-4.

In the second half, freshman Alexandria Bierce (Roxbury, Conn.) became the third Seahawk to score her first goal of the season as she converted a pass from senior Lindsey Burt (Hopedale, Mass.) into the Seahawks fifth-consecutive marker. Junior Natalie Bates (North Kingston, R.I.) answered for DWC to make it 6-2, but freshman Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) scored the first of her career at 63:58 to put Salve Regina back in front by four at 6-2. Ackerman closed the scoring with her second of the evening and team-leading fourth of the season at 69:19.

Sophomore Helen Bohenberger (East Falmouth, Mass.) made her first-career start in goal for the Seahawks and recorded eight saves. Junior Amy Prince (Hope Valley, R.I.) registered 17 saves for Daniel Webster.

The Seahawks and Gulls meet in Beverly, Mass. on Friday at 5 p.m. The Eagles host Rivier tomorrow at 4 p.m.
