Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior Jason Couto (Somerset, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie with a goal at 87:40 to lift UMass.-Dartmouth to a 1-0 win over Salve Regina University in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Field in Newport.
The closely-contested match was won when junior Mike Aves (Seekonk, Mass.) fed a crossing pass through the box to Couto, who knocked the ball into the top of the net and over senior goalkeeper Kurt Ginthwain (Tolland, Conn.).
The Corsairs (1-0) outshot the Seahawks 8-4 in the opening half, but Ginthwain made several key saves to keep the game knotted at zero. Freshman netminder Kellen Rauch (Ashland, Mass.) was not challenged often but was solid in his collegiate debut, making one save. He was replaced with fellow freshman Mike Phelan (Carver, Mass.) to start the second half and finished with one save.
The Seahawks best scoring chance of the match came just minutes before the winning goal was scored. Freshman Bobby Ernst (Needham, Mass.) took a cross pass and rang a shot off the right post behind Phelan.
Sophomore Christopher Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) led the Seahawks with three shots while Couto registered a team-high four shots. The Seahawks - who were outshot 14-8 on the afternoon - were credited with 15 fouls, compared to 14 for the Corsairs.
The Seahawks (0-2) return to action on Wednesday when they host Coast Guard at 4 p.m.
