Johnson propels Seahawks to first win of 2010

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Senior Ken Johnson (Colonia, N.J.) scored the only goal of the game breaking the scoreless tie with just 6:13 left in regulation as Salve Regina picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 win over host Coast Guard in a non-conference game.

Coast Guard had an excellent chance to break the scoreless tie with just over 20 minutes left, but the Bears came up empty.

The Bears (1-1) controlled the play late in the game and had a pair of chances to tie the match in the final three minutes, but couldn't score the equalizer.

Sophomore Jacob Brigandi (Vernon, Conn.) assisted on the Seahawk goal as Salve Regina (1-2) snapped its two-game losing streak to start the season. Coast Guard outshot Salve Regina 6-2.

"This is a very good result for us when you consider all of the factors - a midweek game on the first day of classes against an always tough and strong opponent," said Salve Regina head coach Craig O'Rourke II. "I thought we did a good job of defending their size and strength in the air and when we were able to get possession and string some passes together, we were able to find our rhythm and orchestrate at their net. I'm very happy with our effort this evening and the overall performance that we turned in."

Sophomore Devin O'Gorman (Canton, Mass.) made two saves, both in the second half, to record the shutout. Senior Chris Tarbell made one save in the loss for Coast Guard.
