Ciampa breaks away for 1-0 WPI win

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Sophomore forward Chris Ciampa (Danvers, Mass.) broke free from the Salve Regina defense to score an unassisted goal in the 15th minute to lead WPI men's soccer to its fourth straight victory, 1-0, at Gaudet Field in Middletown.

Ciampa battled Seahawk senior Ian Jentgen (Columbus, Ohio) for a loose ball and the second-year Engineer got a step ahead of Jentgen on the left side and dribbled closer to the net before popping a goal past the on rushing Seahawk freshman keeper, Kyle Kureczka (Berlin, Conn.). WPI improves to 8-1 overall while Salve Regina suffers its third straight one-goal defeat and falls to 4-4-1 on the season.

Salve Regina outshot WPI in each period (8 to 6 in the first and 4 to 1 in the second) and had five corner kick opportunities to none for the visitors. Sophomore keeper Jeff Wong (Millington, N.J.) stopped all five shots in his direction. In addition, the reigning NEWMAC defensive player of the week had his second half goal kicks and clears consistently carry deep into the Seahawk half of the field.

Senior forward Christopher Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) led Salve Regina with three shots.

WPI won for the third time in four meetings with Salve Regina. The Seahawks host Endicott College on Saturday at Reynolds Field (3:30 p.m.) during their homecoming weekend. WPI plays at Babson College in a 2:30 p.m. start.
