Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University women's volleyball team dropped their first home match of the season, falling 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 25-15) to Roger Williams University during a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest on Senior Night at the Rodgers Recreation Center. The Seahawks now fall to 13-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference, while the first place Hawks improve to 17-9 on the season and a perfect 6-0 during CCC play.
Before the contest, Salve Regina honored seniors Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Sarah Showalter (East Lyme, Conn.) for all of their contributions to the program. Clancy currently ranks second on SRU's all-time digs list, entering the night needing just 94 more digs to break the Seahawks' career record. Showalter came into the match 11th all-time at SRU with 87 aces, and ranking seventh all-time in serve percentage (.867)
Sophomore Erin McGloin (West Islip, N.Y.) led the way for the Seahawks, compiling seven kills and a match-high seven blocks. Junior Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) and sophomore Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) each recorded a team-high nine kills, with Duggan adding four blocks and Adams adding a team-best 22 digs. Other top performers included sophomore Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) with 26 assists, freshman Emily Lipinski (Hampden, Mass.) with seven kills and three blocks, and Megan Clancy with 19 digs.
Senior Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamstead, Conn.) had an excellent night for the Hawks, leading all players with 18 kills on 44 attacks while recording a .250 hitting percentage. Junior Alexi Armenti (Dix Hills, N.Y.) had 12 kills and just two attack errors on 29 swings and added a pair of blocks, while freshman Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.) dished-out a match-high 27 assists. Senior Kelsse Loche (Millis, Mass.) also played well in the win, recording a match-high 24 digs and three aces.
The Hawks never trailed in the opening set, receiving 11 assists from Weber and five kills from Twarog to capture the frame, 25-16. It marked the first set the Seahawks had dropped at home all season.
The Seahawks managed to rebound in the second set, building an early 7-4 lead and never trailing on their way to taking the stanza, 25-20. Adams led the way with four kills and eight digs in the set, while McGloin added two kills and a pair of blocks.
With the score knotted at 3-all in the third frame, the Hawks broke out for four consecutive points, including a pair of kills by Twarog to open up a 7-3 advantage. The Seahawks responded by taking five of the next six points to square things up at 8-8. With the Hawks holding a slight 11-10 edge, RWU went on a 7-2 run, receiving a pair of aces by Loche to take an 18-12 advantage. From there, the Hawks glided to take the set, 25-16.
In the fourth and final set, the Hawks jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, benefiting from another ace by Loche and taking advantage of several SRU miscues. However, the Seahawks refused to go quietly, taking five of the next seven points to close the RWU lead to just 9-7. The Hawks lead was 13-10 when they went on a 5-1 run, sparked by a pair of kills from both Twarog and junior Holly Hancock (Tilton, N.H.), to build an 18-11 edge. The Hawks went on to take the set 25-15.
The Hawks don't return to action until next Wednesday, hosting Western New England at 7 p.m., while the Seahawks return to the court on Thursday, traveling to face Connecticut College at 7 p.m.
