Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - After a scoreless first half, junior midfielder Matthew Monheit (Abington, Pa.) broke free in the first half minute of the second to kick start a 3-0 MIT victory over Salve Regina University men's soccer in non-league action at Gaudet Field.

Seahawk starting keeper Daniel Stern (King's Park, N.Y.) made five saves in the first half, including a point-blank stop as he rushed sophomore forward John Kramer (Glastonbury, Conn.) at the 23:54 mark. Massachusetts Institute of Technology had seven first half corner kick opportunities.

MIT had first touch in the second half, put the ball into the Salve Regina backfield, and then Monheit stole the ball from the Seahawk defender at the 30-yard mark and got the better of a one-on-one meeting with Stern. Freshman midfielder Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.Y.) made it 2-0 when he converted a pass from sophomore Nick Diamantoni (Belle Mead, N.J.) at 62:00.

MIT senior defender Chris Hammond (Wilmington, Del.), who handled most Engineer corner kicks, took a free kick ball at 84:04 and hooked it around a Seahawk wall and Stern's replacement, Jeffrey L'Heureux (Litchfield, N.H.). The Engineers have won all eight head-to-head meetings with the Seahawks.

Senior Bobby Ernst (Needham, Mass.) played a solid midfield and earned Man of the Match honors for the Seahawk side. Salve Regina falls to 9-2 overall while MIT improves to 7-2-1. Sophomore keeper Samuel Cannon (Scarsdale, N.Y.) earned the shutout while making four saves.

The Seahawks hit the road for their next four contests, beginning Thursday at Fitchburg State University (7 p.m.). MIT faces WPI on Saturday.
