Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior center Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the second half to lead Salve Regina University women's basketball to a 63-42 win over visiting Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action in Newport.

The Seahawks went to sophomore forward Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass.) on their opening possession to claim an early 2-0 lead. The Fighting Scots had their own sophomore forward give them a 3-2 lead when Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) sank a 3-pointer on their opening possession.

Shorey and Laura Anne Dinan (Monterey, Mass.) had two baskets apiece during the run. Kaitlyn Birrell (Scituate, R.I.) and Brianna DelValle (Belchertown, Mass.) had a jumper and layup, respectively.

Birrell was more busy stealing and distributing the ball in the first half, tallying six swipes and eight assists by the break.

The Seahawks put the game out of reach 12 minutes into the second half with a 22-9 run to open the period. Shorey, who was honored before the game along with fellow senior co-captain Kira Murphy (New Boston, N.H.), made 7-of-9 field goals in the 12-minute span. Rosenlund had two more baskets for a season-best nine-point effort.

Birrell finished with 10 assists, her third game this season with double-figure assists. Shorey had 11 rebounds while Pendergast had 11 points as Salve Regina remained in a tie for second place in the league with Endicott College. The Gulls face league-leading University of New England on Tuesday.

Salve Regina entertains Nichols College on Valentine's Day. Anyone wearing red will be admitted free to the 6 p.m. contest.
