Wasilewski's goal gives Seahawks 1-0 victory

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior forward Alex Wasilewski (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) converted a feed from sophomore midfielder Andrew Chenard (Kingston, Mass.) for the only goal as Salve Regina University men's soccer defeated Endicott College, 1-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Reynolds Field.

Wasilewski scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season at 53:26 after Chenard flicked a header near midfield. The junior forward drew the defenders downfield before crossing over to his left and booting his shot with his left foot past the diving Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) at the near post.

Salve Regina (6-6-1; 3-2-0 CCC) played a man down for the final 24 minutes after sophomore Joseph Pate (Smithfield, R.I.) earned a red card and immediate ejection.

"This is a great win for us and a testament to the quality of talent across our entire roster," said Seahawk head coach Craig O'Rourke II. "With the number of injuries that we took in our mid-week match at MIT, we had to call upon some individuals who have not yet played a lot of minutes for us this year. And they really stepped up and gave us quality today."

O'Rourke's squad registered its fourth shutout of the season and third in last four games.

"In particular, I thought (Patrick) Charland was nothing short of spectacular for us in the back in what he did to neutralize their big, dominant target striker. To get this result today and not have to utilize our captain (Issa Demirgioglu), who was available to us for limited minutes, is simply a tremendous result on the day."

Endicott (7-7-0; 2-3-0 CCC) brought a physical style of play that drew 14 fouls and three yellow cards. The Gulls were outshot in both halves and 20-to-12 on the day.

Peluso made eight saves in his work in the net. Salve Regina sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Stern (Kings Park, N.Y.) countered with four saves as he now owns all four shutouts for the Seahawks while improving his record to 6-2-1. One shot by the Gulls' dominant target striker, junior Abdulla Al Khalifa (Riffa, Bahrain), escaped Stern's grasp but Patrick Charland (Duxbury, Mass.) was there at the goal line to clear the ball away.

The man of the match for the Seahawks went to freshman defender Steven Aston (Sherborn, Mass.) who won the majority of first headers and took most of the Seahawks' free kicks to jump start the offense.

Salve Regina plays a non-league match at Suffolk on Wednesday (7 p.m.) while Endicott has a week off before playing at CCC foe Curry next Saturday (11 a.m.).
