Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Six pitchers combined to allow just one run as the Salve Regina University baseball team defeated visiting Suffolk University 6-1 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks have won 4 of the last five meetings with the Rams, but Suffolk still holds a 13-8 edge all-time.

Three Stars of the Day

  1. Salve Regina junior Jared Beniers (Abington, Mass.) recorded three hits, a run scored, an RBI, and a walk.
  2. Salve Regina graduate student Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) singled in the bottom of the third, driving home Matt D'Amato (Midland, Park. N.J.) to break a scoreless tie, then singled again in the bottom of the fifth to score Beniers for a 2-0 lead.
  3. Salve Regina freshman Tyler Petrosino (Beverly, Mass.) doubled in his first collegiate at-bat in the bottom of the eighth to drive in two runs for the game's final margin.

Turning Point
The Rams drew within one run on a Christian Seariac (Framingham, Mass.) single in the top of the sixth, but surrendered it right back in the bottom of the frame when the Rams walked Beniers with the bases loaded. The Seahawks led 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth before Petrosino's two-run double broke it open.

Quick Hits

  • Steven Rossi (Corning, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Rams and suffers the loss, surrendering one run in three innings of work to fall to 1-3.
  • Zach Lopez (New Canaan, Conn.) got the start for Salve Regina and tossed three shutout innings with two strikeouts to improve to 2-0.
  • After Lopez the Seahawks turned to Walker Sharp, Brayden Clark, Chris Beach, Holden Ferrari, and finally Andrew Roman to close out the ninth.
  • Four different players hit doubles for Salve Regina.

Quote
"We're still getting better and figuring some things out. I was happy with the way we swung the bat overall and our level of compete, as I think the timely hitting will come and will equal more runs. The pitchers continue to carry the loads for us. They threw the ball well and gave us a good chance to win." – head coach Eric Cirella.
