Scots snap six-game skid with 10-point win against Seahawks

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. (January 27, 2022) - Sophomore guard Cara Andreotti (Everett, Mass.) dropped a game-high 23 points to lead visiting Gordon College to a 58-48 women's basketball victory over Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Thursday evening.

The Fighting Scots (5-10, 3-6 CCC) snapped a six-game losing streak, the previous five losses in CCC play, while the Seahawks (7-8, 6-3 CCC) have lost two straight at home (with a road win at Wentworth in Boston, Mass., in between).

Gordon got out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and never trailed. Salve Regina got as close as two points (45-43) after a pair of free throws from sophomore Briana Neary (Wayne, N.J.) with 6:20 remaining in the fourth quarter. Madison Wynbeek (North Haledon, N.J.) scored four of her team's first 10 points with a pair of driving layups. Wynbeek's third shot attempt was blocked by Seahawk Megan Henaghan (Whitman, Mass.), first of five swats for the junior captain.

The Scots were six-of-12 (50 percent) from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes, but then dropped to 12.5 percent (one-of-eight) in the second half. Salve Regina struggled from the floor (17-66 overall; 25.8 percent) and especially from behind the arc (3-for-23; 13.0 percent). Wynbeek (pronounced WINE-beak) finished with a double-double while scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 boards. Caleigh Williams (Kent, Wash.) also had 10 caroms, seven off the defensive glass. Serianna Anderson (Newcastle, Wash.) dished out five of her team's 13 assists.

Salve Regina was led by Neary and junior captain Morgan Shuey (Corning, Iowa) on the score sheet, both with 13 points. Shuey also had a team-high four assists. Neary was perfect from the charity stripe (seven-for-seven) and the Seahawks finished 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) in free throws. Sophomore Olivia Martin (Hanson, Mass.) had a team-high eight rebounds for the Seahawks.

Because of Saturday's expected snowstorm, all events that day are postponed and/or rescheduled for Salve Regina. The Seahawks will host the Leopards on Monday at 5:30 p.m. for their next game. The Scots look to make it two wins in a row when they welcome Western New England University to the Bennett Center on Saturday at 1 p.m.
