Regels, Costello's late goals elevate Seahawks above Warriors

Salve Regina moves to 9-0 this season


NEWPORT, R.I. -- (Wednesday, October 2, 2024)-- Thanks to Angelina Regels and Georgia Costello's late goals in the fourth quarter Salve Regina University field hockey defeated the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors 3-1 in non-conference action on Wednesday.

Eastern Connecticut was the first to strike when, just 6:30 into the contest, Warriors' Rebecca Minaya scored her second goal of the season. Shannon Kennedy fought back, getting Salve Regina on the board just under four minutes later. It wasn't until the final 15 minutes in regulation that Angelina Regels had the Seahawks' game winning goal. Georgia Costello scored her seventh goal of the season with less than a minute left to play in the game. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Salve Regina (9-0, 2-0 NEWMAC), Eastern Connecticut (4-3, 0-0 LEC)
History: Salve Regina is 14-2 all-time against Eastern Connecticut. When the teams last met in 2022 the Warriors won 3-1, but the year prior the Seahawks saw a 5-1 success.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Salve Regina outshot Eastern Connecticut 13-6. 
  • The Seahawks only just had the advantage of seven to the Warriors six penalty corners. 
  • No penalties or ejections were given during the encounter. 
  • Goalie Bryn Protheroe played the full 60 minutes and made five stops.
