Seahawks downed by Blue, 2-1

Field hockey falls to 2-1 in the NEWMAC

NEWPORT, R.I. -- (Saturday, October 5, 2024)-- Salve Regina University's Julia Decker scored her 11th goal of the season in the first four minutes of field hockey action against NEWMAC opponent Wellesley College, but the Blue struck back with two goals of their own in their second and fourth periods putting Wellesley on top 2-1.

Decker currently leads the Seahawks in goals scored and is trailed by Shannon Kennedy, with eight this season. Georgia Costello nabbed the ball from Wellesley just outside the shooting circle and went right for the net, passing through traffic to Decker on the opposite side of Blue goalie Hannah Simmonds. All Decker had to do was tap it in and the Seahawks got on the board.

The Blue tied the game with a shot from the side made by Annika Schermerhorn with five minutes remaining in the first half. Schermerhorn was the sole scorer for Wellesley, also scoring the team's game winning goal at the 49:32 mark.
