NEWPORT, R.I. -- (Tuesday, October 8, 2024)-- The Salve Regina University women's volleyball team went five sets against the visiting Regis College Pride at the Rodgers Recreation center Tuesday night. With the Seahawks ahead 13-12 in set five the Pride secured the last three points of the day to surge ahead and win 3-2.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Regis 3, Salve Regina 2
Records: Salve Regina (5-11,2-2 NEWMAC), Regis (14-5,6-1 GNAC)
History: The Seahawks have a 7-3 all-time record against the Pride dating back to the 2005 season. In 2023 Salve Regina fell 3-1 to Regis on the road in Weston, Massachusetts. Brighton Solheim '24 (19) an Lauren Hoyle (13) were the Seahawk top performers in the kill category against Regis.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Set One: The first set was close right from the onset with Regis up by two consistently and furthering gap as the match progressed. Salve closed the gap to tie it up 21-21. Lauren Shurling posted a solid first set with four kills late in the action to keep the Seahawks vying for first with the Pride. Lauren Hoyle's kill moved the tie to 22-22 but Regis moved ahead for the win. 25-22
- Set Two: Regis got off to a strong strong start with Salve closing the game as the contest reached 9-9. The lead change came when the Seahawks surged ahead 18-11, setting them ahead by seven points consistency to the end for a Seahawk set two win. Lauren Hoyle's kills, earned the Seahawks points four and five, helping to contribute to their comeback. Lucy Swanson saw the Seahawks most kills across the set with nine. 25-16
- Set Three: Regis had the first point, but it was once again a tied game at 5-5. The set saw five lead changes throughout the entirety however Regis nabbed the final four points to give them a 2-1 game advantage and a set three win. 26-24
- Set Four: It didn't look good for the Seahawks after Regis got an early 5-0 lead however Salve scored four unanswered points to get them back in the game. After Regis once again got the lead Lauren Hoyle's block triggered a three-point run for the Seahawks tying the score at 11-11. Two kills from Lucy Swanson made the difference in Salve's set four win. 26-24
- Set Five: Regis took a 2-0 lead but Lucy Swanson's two kills got the Seahawks in the game. Neither program let up until the score board red 12-12. Despite Lauren Shurling's service ace Regis inched ahead to win the set. 15-13
ON THE HORIZON:
The Seahawks are back at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Friday, October 11, at 7 p.m. when they take on conference foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
