Norwich overcomes Salve 2-1 in third period

NEWPORT, R.I. (Friday, November 15, 2024)-- Thanks to Emma and Reese Pereira Salve Regina University women's ice hockey got themselves a 1-0 lead over the visiting No.13 Norwich University Cadets to end the second quarter 1-0. However, Norwich's strength showed late in the game when they surged ahead with two goals in a five minute span to give them a 2-1 verdict.

History: In women's ice hockey Salve Regina has a 2-14-3 record against Norwich since the 2007-08 season. The first meeting on February 3, 2008 was a 3-2 loss for the Seahawks. The program's most recent win against Norwich was a 3-1 victory on January 11, 2009. When the teams last me on January 28, 2018 the Cadets blanked the Seahawks 0-5. Seahawk goalie Jennifer O'Connell made 44 saves. 

NOTEWORTHY
  • After one period neither team had a score up on the board. Taylor Hannafan made 12 saves while Cadets' Leocadia Clark made seven saves after 20 minutes
  • With 17:35 gone from the clock in period two, Salve Regina established a 1-0 lead. Reese Pereira fed the puck to Emma Pereira from the left face off circle. Emma weaved in and out of Cadet defenders to get slightly closer to the net and with a slap shot sent the puck sailing to the back of the net. 
  • To get Norwich back in the game, from nearly adjacent to the net, Cadet's Olivia Boyer nabbed Norwich's first goal of the night. With the potential of going to overtime, the Cadets ues the momentum they had gained from their first success to score again, this time with only five minutes to go.
  • The Cadets had a total of nine shots blocked by defenders while the Seahawks blocked six shots. Salve attempted the majority of their shots from the slot, or from the right face off dot. 
  • Hannafan totaled 25 saves, two more than Norwich's Clark who had 23. 
ON THE HORIZON
Tomorrow, November 16, the Seahawks and Cadets return to the Ice at the Cabot-Harman Ice Center for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
