No. 16 Engineers stall Seahawks 5-0, Salve advances to postseason

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- With at least one goal per period Massachusetts Institute of Technology shutout Salve Regina University field hockey 5-0 in the last game of the regular season. With today's results Salve Regina field hockey enters the postseason for the first time since joining the NEWMAC in 2023 as the No. 5 seed. 

Salve Regina held MIT at bay for the first two periods, only allowing two goals to slip through the posts. By the end of the first half the Engineers had outshot the Seahawks 14-8, but with a six penalty corner deficit Salve Regina stayed powerful on defense. In the Second half, Julia Decker nearly scored in a breakaway play when  MIT's Maeve Zimmer found herself outside of the net however, Audrey Oh slipped in to make a defensive save for the team.

The Engineers scored three more times in the remaining half. Seahawks goalie Bryn Protheroe was reliable in the net, with 22 exceptional  saves over 60 minutes.

History: This is the second meeting of the Seahawks and Engineers in field hockey. Last year, the Seahawks first year in the NEWMAC, was the first time the two teams saw each other. MIT secured an 8-1 win. Julia Decker scored in the 45th minute of the encounter to get the Seahawks on the board.
