Bush's first collegiate goal elevates Seahawks 2-1 over Wildcats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Saturday, November 2, 2024)-- Salve Regina University women's ice hockey beat Rhode Island rivalry Johnson & Wales University 2-1 Saturday night in non-conference action in their second game in two days.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final
: Salve Regina 2, Johnson & Wales 1
Records: Salve Regina (1-1, 0-0 NEHC), Johnson & Wales (0-1, 0-0 CNE)
History: The Seahawks are 6-2 all-time against Johnson & Wales. Including today, Salve Regina has won the last three consecutive meetings. Last season the Seahawks beat JWU 4-1 at home. Gina Richard, Jillian Egan, Ashtyn Bringardner and Jennifer Rickard were the instigators in the encounter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman Sarah Bush scored her first goal in the Seahawk uniform just under three minutes into the game with a slap shot from up high, at the face off circle after she received a pass from Emma Pereira. It was the only scoring in the first period and the Seahawks went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. Ashtyn Bringardner extended the lead 2-0 seven minutes into the second period from right in front of the Wildcats' net on a break away play. Johnson & Wales did sink a goal of their own ten seconds later. JWU's Reese Middendorf poked it in the corner of the goal to make it a 2-1 game, with the Seahawks still in the lead.

It was a scoreless third period, although Salve Regina did not let up on offense with 13 to JWU's four shots on goal. However, Johnson & Wales stick handling got them nine of the 13 third period face off wins. It was a strong day for the Seahawk freshman class with Bush's opening goal and Taylor Hannafan's 16 saves in goal for a .941 save percentage.

NOTEWORTHY
  • This is the first year JWU is competing in the CNE. Last year the Wildcats were a member of the NEHC, the conference the Seahawks have entered this season.
  • Overall Salve Regina outshot Johnson & Wales 31-17.
  • No one scored on the power play. The Seahawks were 0-5 and the Wildcats went 0-1 with an extra skater opportunity.
  • Ashtyn Bringardner and Emily Wroblewski led the team in shots on goal with five.
