Seahawks defeat Blue 3-1 for NEWMAC win

NEWPORT, R.I. -- (Tuesday, September 24, 2024)-- With decisive 25-18 win in set two, Salve Regina University women's volleyball came back from a one set deficit to beat Wellesley College 3-1 in the Sehakws first NEWMAC game on 2024. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Salve Regina (4-7, 1-0 NEWMAC), Wellesley (5-2, 0-2 NEWMAC)
History: Prior to tonight's match the Seahawks and Blue had only met twice before with each team winning once. In 2023 the Blue won 3-2 in Wellesley, Massachusetts. In 2022 the Seahawks beat the Blue 3-1.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Salve Regina trailed 25-14 in set one, after Wellesley led with a 0.333 hitting percentage. 
  • The turning point of the match came in set two when Salve Regina went on a four point run after leading early on to bring the score to 7-14. The Seahawks never let the Blue within sight of another set win until the fourth set. Once the game had reached 24-24 a Blue error followed by Lauren Shurling's decisive kill ended the day in favor of the team from Newport.
  • Lauren Hoyle (11), Lauren Shurling (7) and Lydia Daskalos (6) sat atop the Seahawk kill category. Siena DeCicco made 27 assists and Lily Dobbins had 21 digs. 
  • Notably, Kate Giang led the Blue with 20 kills.

QUOTING THE TEAM:
"Our determination and fire led to us win that game," said team captain Siena DeCicco. "We did let up that first set but we fought back the entire time. This whole season we've been really fighting to compete in the NEWMAC and we came back and we crushed the first game. After last season we really worked hard to build up our players and our strength and it really showed tonight."

ON THE HORIZON:

On Saturday, September 28, Salve Regina hosts Mount Holyoke College at 1 p.m. in another NEWMAC match at the Rodgers Recreation Center.
