Costello, Spedden, Vaughn, Kennedy add single goals

NEWPORT, R.I.
-- (Wednesday, September 25, 2024)-- In their fourth shutout of the season Salve Regina University field hockey did not let up, especially with four goals from junior Julia Decker, in their 8-0 victory over Nichols College.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 8, Nichols 0
Records: Salve Regina (7-0, 1-0 NEWMAC), Nichols (2-7, 0-1 CNE)
History: The Seahawks and Bison have a long history after competing in the CCC, now the CNE, for years. Salve has a 26-17 advantage over Nichols with the last meeting a 7-0 win in 2023.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Salve got right to work with a goal from Georgia Costello just five minutes into the game.
  • Five different Seahawks scored during the encounter, with Julia Decker achieving a hat trick. The Sehawks second through fourth goals are credited to Decker, along with a fourth quarter slice from right in front of the net, fed to Decker from Natalie Vaughan.
  • The Seahawks had one penalty stroke opportunity, which went high of the net.
  • The team from Newport had a 9-6 penalty corner advantage.
  • The Seahawks entire roster got in the game including all three goalies, Bryn Protheroe, Madi Allard and Julia Caron. Protheroe earns the shutout giving her a 7-0 season record. The trio were only forced to make two saves across 60 minutes.
  • Bison goalie Sophia Venable remained in the game for the duration and made 15 saves.

QUOTING COACH FOSTER:

"Tonight was a good team win. It's great to be able to play all three goalies and get everyone an opportunity to showcase their skills. We have a tough road ahead of us with some NEWMAC games coming up. We're excited to get back to work at our next practice and keep putting the pieces together. "

ON THE HORIZON:

Salve Regina field hockey will take on Smith College on the road at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 28.
