Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Costello and Regels elevate Seahawks 2-0 over Wildcats

MIDDLETOWN, R.I.
-- (Wednesday, September 4, 2024)-- In nonconference action the Salve Regina University field hockey team halted the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats 2-0 on the Gaudet Field turf as the sun set Wednesday night.

Junior, transfer from SUNY New Paltz, Angelina Regels scored her first goal in the Seahawk uniform, goal number two of the evening for Salve Regina.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 2, Johnson & Wales 0
Records: Salve Regina (2-0), Johnson & Wales (1-2)
History: Salve Regina has an 8-2 advantage over Johnson & Wales since the 2013 season but the last time the teams met in 2022 the Wildcats won 3-0.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Seahawks struck early, just 4:37 into the first quarter however with only a one-point lead neither team was afforded the ability to be comfortable throughout the encounter.
  • The Wildcats outshot the Seahawks 9-0 in the second quarter, but a formidable Seahawk defense held off Johnson & Wales attacks.
  • With less than ten minutes to go in the game Bella Gannon's penalty corner allowed a straight shot from Regel's stick making it a 2-0 game.
  • Salve Regina totaled nine shots on goal, and their counterparts reached 11, although none of which were successful.
  • Senior Bryn Protheroe played the full 60 minutes.

QUOTING COACH FOSTER:
"It was a hard-fought win. It was good to see our team remain composed in that third and fourth quarter as it was becoming a more physical game and there were more 50/50 balls. I think what we can take away from this the most is that we have to play within ourselves and stay poised and composed and really play to Salve field hockey's style. A lot to learn from it, but it's a great nonconference win to get us to 2-0."

ON THE HORIZON:

Saturday, September 7, marks the next game for the Seahawks against the Salem State University Vikings on the road at noon.
