Seahawks blank Vikings

Salve Regina field hockey improves to 3-0 on season


SALEM, Mass.
-- (Saturday, September 7, 2024)-- In a breakout second quarter the Salve Regina University field hockey team surpassed the Salem State University Vikings 6-0 during a noon road game on Saturday.

The scoring was broken up with five goals in the second period followed by one final success from freshman Molly Kearney with just over two minutes to go in the game. Julia Decker and Georgia Costello scored, after Natalie Vaughan started the momentum with a goal 1:16 into the second quarter. Shannon Kennedy and Carly King also added to the goal count as the clock ticked town in the period two. Vaughan, Kearney and King all scored for the first time as a Seahawk.

History: Dating back to the 2005 season the Seahawks are 8-6 against the Vikings. Salve Regina has won the last five encounters.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Seahawks were dominant at the net, outshooting the Vikings 27-0.
  • Goalies Bryn Protheroe and Madi Allard were not called on to make a single save, thanks to a strong offensive unit, which kept the action near the Viking's net.
  • Salve Regina had a whopping 26 penalty corners across 60 minutes.
