Salve Regina earns NEWMAC victory over MIT, 75-67

Declan Walmsley scores 21 and surpasses 1,000-point milestone

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Senior captain Declan Walmsley scored eight of his 21 points in the final three and a half minutes (including the 1,000th of his career) as Salve Regina University men's basketball defeated MIT, 75-67, in NEWMAC action at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.

Salve Regina (4-8, 1-2 NEWMAC), which led for 27 minutes of the contest, trailed by one at halftime (29-28). Jojo Powers led all players with 25 points on 7-of-11 from the field including 6-of-7 from deep -- all three attempts in the second half.

History: These programs meet for the eighth time in men's basketball and third time as fellow NEWMAC members. Last season, each team won on the other's home court. Declan Walmsley led all players in scoring (23 points) as the Seahawks claimed an 85-73 victory in Cambridge, Mass., last January. James Jolly added 15 and Sean Seymour chipped in 13 for Salve Regina. Will Bland (25) and Tim Minicozzi (21) combined for 46 points in an 86-81 win at Rodgers Recreation Center later that month. Salve Regina (3-5 all-time in the series) has won two of the last three meetings with MIT.
