Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Margoupis hits game-winning 3-pointer for Seahawks, 72-71

Salve Regina defeats UMass Boston for the second time in men's basketball

BOSTON -- Junior transfer Jack Margoupis (Sutton, Mass.) scored a game-high 28 points including a 3-pointer with 15 seconds to go to give visiting Salve Regina University men's basketball a 72-71 victory over UMass Boston in non-league action at the Clark Athletic Center. It was the season opener for the Seahawks (1-0) while the Beacons fall to 1-1.

The game featured 13 ties and 13 lead changes. Cameron Perkins started the scoring with a 3-pointer for the Beacons and later he made 1-of-2 free throws for a 4-0 lead before senior captain Jack McMullen (East Greenwich, R.I.) hit a trey for the first Seahawk points of the season. Domenic Malvey (Newton, N.H.) hit a free throw to tie the score at 18, and Pat Spenard (Rochester, Mass.) had a layup on an assist from Margoupis at 1:38 of the first half for the first Seahawk lead, 34-32. Spenard's layup in the closing seconds sent the game to intermission tied at 36-all.

Senior captain Sean Seymour (Albany, N.Y.) scored the first basket of the second half. Margoupis fashioned an old-fashioned three-point play with a turnaround jumper at 10:27 and subsequent free throw to put the Seahawks ahead, 56-54. Salve Regina held the lead for nearly five minutes. Davon Sanders converted an old-fashioned three-point play for the Beacons at 5:46 on a fast-break layup to tie the game at 61-all. Perkins again made 1-of-2 free throws and later a 3-pointer for a four-point Beacon advantage, 67-63, before Margoupis had a fast break layup off a Seymour steal. Margoupis' fourth triple of the game tied the score at 69-all with 1:04 remaining. Corrie Byrd tipped in a Beacon miss for a two-point lead, 71-69, with 30 seconds to go before Margoupis got the ball in front of his bench for the last basket of the game.

QUOTABLE SEAHAWKS

"Our group showed great resilience against a very talented UMass Boston team.  Many games at this level come down to execution of a possession or two in critical times and they expose your preparation, character and heart.  Our staff is proud of our guys, especially with many new faces, and how they responded.  We hope to build on this and continue to improve going forward." -- Seahawk head coach Sean Foster '97
