Seahawks catch a 38-10 win against Cadets on the road

Jacoby Smith has a trio of TD receptions

NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Senior wide receiver Jacoby Smith (Middletown, R.I.) caught a career-high 10 passes for 114 yards including three touchdowns (19, 29, 3) as Salve Regina University football routed Norwich University, 38-10, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Sabine Field in Northfield, Vermont.

The Seahawks (5-4, 2-4 NEWMAC) end a four-game skid with a nearly 14-minute advantage on the possession clock. Salve Regina won the coin toss and deferred but got their first drive started immediately when the opening kickoff was muffed and picked up by Andrew Bossey (Norwell, Mass.) at the Norwich 25. After a six-yard run by Justan Luzzi (Belleville, N.J.), senior quarterback Thomas Fallon (Freehold, N.J.) found Smith at the four-yard line and he waltzed in for the score. Nathan DiRado (Carver, Mass.) made the first of his five extra-point kicks.

DiRado's 27-yard field goal kick came in the final minute of the first quarter to make it 10-0 Salve Regina.

The Cadets (1-8, 0-6 NEWMAC) engineered the longest scoring drive of the day in terms of plays (15), but they could only move the ball 56 yards and muster three points on a 32-yard field goal from Zack Zegarra (Ridgewood, N.J.).

Scott Nico's (Bayville, N.J.) 23-yard kickoff return set the Seahawks up on their next drive at their own 35. Fallon and company move the ball 52 yards in seven plays to face a 4th-and-4 at the Norwich 13 when Padraig Brown's (Newington, Conn.) number (#7) was called for three straight rushing plays. The junior backup signal caller answered the call with eight then four and finally one-yard carries into the end zone.

A nine-play, 71-yard drive accounted for the only touchdown of the day for the Cadets. Norwich started at its own 29 with 4:29 on the first-half clock. Senior defensive lineman Billy Schwanewede (Oradell, N.J.) sacked Tyler Hermanns (Wading River, N.Y.) for a six-yard loss. On 3rd-and-16, Cameron Sousa (Saugerties, N.Y.) caught a Hermanns' pass for 17 yards. Schwanewede and Jason Fisher (Hamburg, N.J.) teamed up for another sack and forced a punt on 4th-and-11 at the Norwich 39, but a personal foul penalty awarded the Cadets a first down in Seahawk territory. A 12-yard completion to Tommy McDonagh (Braintree, Mass.) and a 13-yard catch for Ben Weers (Hebron, Conn.) preceded a Hermanns to Henri Bourque (Claremont, N.H.) 26-yard pass play for a touchdown.

Michael Rutstein (Hudson, N.H.) fielded a short kickoff and ran 11 yards to the Salve Regina 43 with 29 seconds remaining in the first half. A pass interference penalty brought the Seahawks onto the Cadets side of the field. It took Fallon and Smith two pass completions (15 and 29 yards) to score with no time left on the clock.

In the second half, Salve Regina went three and out (43-yard punt by Fallon) on its first drive and then on its second drive, an 83-yard rushing touchdown by Luzzi was nullified by a Seahawk holding penalty. After another Fallon punt gave the ball back to the Cadets, Evan Tullson (Little Compton, R.I.) picked off a Dustin Philpott (Cedar Ridge, Calif.) pass and returned it 27 yards to the Norwich four-yard line before going out of bounds. Brown's first carry put the Seahawks one yard out and senior captain and tight end Thomas Gangi (Livingston, N.J.) finished the short drive with a touchdown run.

Salve Regina started its final scoring drive in the third quarter and finished it with Smith's third touchdown reception (a 3-yarder) in the fourth quarter. Max Collins (Walpole, Mass.) had a key 4th-and-11 reception for 15 yards to keep the drive alive. Fallon finished with three TD passes (all to Smith) and 15 completions on 29 attempts for 178 yards.

Luzzi carried the ball 21 times and netted 119 yards for his second straight game with over 100 yards rushing and fifth time this season. Schwanewede led the Seahawks with seven tackles (three solo) including 2.5 for losses (-18). Marcues Jean-Jacques (New Canaan, Conn.) recorded his team-high fourth interception of the season. Ben Primich (Yardley, Pa.) led all players with 20 tackles (eight solo) including 2.5 for losses (-5).
