Seahawks punish Panthers from free-throw line

Salve Regina def. Purchase, 62-56

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University junior Jack Margoupis (Sutton, Mass.) led all players with 27 points as the Seahawks defeated Purchase College, 62-56, in non-league men's basketball action at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Tuesday evening in Newport. Salve Regina (6-1) never trailed although there were three ties with the Panthers (2-5).

The Seahawks had one fewer field goal (20-19) but one more 3-pointer (6-5) than the Panthers. The biggest difference came at the charity stripe with the Seahawks sinking 18-of-21 (85.7%) -- Margoupis making half (9) of that total -- and the Panthers struggling with 11-of-22 (50.0%).

Chris Hunter's layup at 4:44 remaining in the second half tied the score at 51-all with the Panthers erasing a 13-point halftime deficit. Junior Pat Spenard (Rochester, Mass.) responded with a clutch 3-pointer with an assist from senior captain Jack McMullen (East Greenwich, R.I.) on the next Seahawk possession.
