Seahawks clamp Camels for one-point victory, 62-61

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University women's basketball rallied from a five-point deficit at halftime to defeat the Camels of Connecticut College, 62-61, in non-league action on Saturday, December 6, at the Rodgers Recreation Center in Newport, Rhode Island.

Senior captain Sofia Neary (Wayne, N.J.) led all players with 18 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double in the first nine games of the season. Freshman Hannah Lauenstein (Delmar, N.Y.) was next on the scoresheet with 17 points including three 3-pointers.

Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) topped all players with her 16 rebounds and made it a double-double with a 10-point effort. Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) paced the Camels with 16 points and five assists.

History: These programs first met in 1983 for a home-away series in the first week of February (each team won its home game). The Camels had a four-game win streak from 1984-1993. Kerry Ceurvels' 1994 squad snapped the skid with a 75-62 win at The Hut. In back-to-back years (1998, 1999), the Seahawks won against the Camels on the road and started a five-game winning streak that carried to 2023. The last meeting (Dec. 8, 2002), Salve Regina won at home, 70-32. Salve Regina's win today evens the all-time series, 9-9.

NOTEWORTHY
  • Sofia Neary registered her seventh double-double with a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Neary was recognized in a pre-game ceremony for scoring her 1,000th career point on November 15, 2025, and becoming the 18th Seahawk to reach the milestone (along with her sister Briana).
  • Six different Seahawks dished out assists with Hannah Lauenstein leading the group with three.
  • Four Camels scored in double figures led by a pair off the bench -- Sofia Tavarez (16) and Addi Hunter (11).
  • Both teams made four 3-pointers, however it took 25 attempts for the Camels (4-for-25, .160) and just eight for the Seahawks (4-for-8, .500).
