Seahawks best Panthers 11-9 in home opener

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (Saturday, February 15, 2025)-- Salve Regina University men's lacrosse defeated the visiting Plymouth State Panthers 11-9 on the turf of Gaudet Field in non conference action to begin the 2025 season.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. Senior captain Liam Cooney, who would go on to record a hat trick, put Salve Regina on the board with two consecutive goals in 20 seconds to tie the game 2-2.

Senior captain Justin DeBalsi scored what would be the game winner at 6:08 in the third quarter.

Cooney scored his 100th goal in the Seahawk uniform and Daniel Naglieri achieved his 100th career point.

"Good start today with a solid win vs an experienced team," said head coach Patrick Cooney. "We had terrific energy from the bench. The team really appreciated the support from the crowd, filled with families, students, recruits, and alumni."

Next week on Wednesday, February 19, at 4 p.m. the Seahawks will make the short trip to Roger Williams University to face the Hawks. Last year Roger Williams escaped with a one-goal win over Salve Regina with an 11-10 final score.
