BRISTOL, R.I. (Wednesday, February 19, 2025)-- Junior Christopher Bethoney sank the Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team's game winning goal with 23 seconds to go in the game over former conference rival and host Roger Williams University.

History: Salve Regina and Roger Williams have a longstanding history as recent foes in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, which has rebranded to Conference of New England since then. Last year, the Seahawks season opening game, the Hawks beat the Seahawks at Gaudet Field 11-10.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chris Koltzan got Salve Regina out of a 2-0 hole before the first quarter ended but by the end of 30 minutes the Seahawks trailed 3-1. Four goals in the third quarter made the difference in the visitor's come-from-behind victory.
- Ten minutes into the third quarter, with a long pass from the edge of the Seahawk attack area by Daniel Naglieri, Heath Sumwalt brought Salve Regina within one goal of the leading Hawks, 4-3. Chris Koltzan scooped up the ball after it hit the deck tied the game with just under a minute to go in the third period.Â
- After taking a face off NEWMAC Face-Off Specialist of the Week for February 10-16, Justin Haverly, immediately grabbed a ground ball and charged to the net, giving the Seahawks their first lead of the game, 5-4.
- Mason Barbone extended the lead to 6-4, deceiving the Hawks by sliding into position to score while Daniel Naglieri faked a shot from the opposite side of the net.
- The Hawks struck back with two goals between the ten and six minute mark to go to tie it at 6-6.Â
- With 1:27 remaining in the game Christopher Bethoney fired off a shot and the Hawks goalie made a critical stop but one minute later Bethoney converted with the game winning goal for a 7-6 verdict.
NOTEWORTHY
- William Kein, in goal for the Seahawks, made seven saves over 60 minutes.
- Hawks' Max Kimmel had 15 in 22 shots on goal from Salve Regina.
ON THE HORIZON
On Saturday, February 22, at 3 p.m. men's lacrosse will host SUNY Maritime in non conference action at Gaudet Field.
