Seahawks drop 13-9 to Bears in season opener

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (Saturday, February 22, 2025)-- Salve Regina University women's lacrosse fell 13-9 to the visiting Bridgewater State Bears in the 2025 season opener at the Seahawks home Gaudet Field on Saturday.

History: Salve Regina and Bridgwater's opponent history dates back to 2008. Beginning a 23-12 loss on March 27, 2008, Salve Regina has a 2-10 all-time record against the Bears in women's lacrosse. Last year the Seahawks won 15-13 on the road against the Bears.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bridgewater netted the first two goals of the game in the first seven minutes of play.
  • Alix Madden established Salve Regina on the board 30 seconds after the Bears' second goal.
  • The Seahawks trailed for the first half but when Samantha Moleti scored in the first three minutes of the second half with an assist from Nora Cooney the Seahawks pulled even 5-5 for the first time in the encounter. 
  • Moleti inched Salve Regina ahead 7-6, scoring her third goal of the day, with 7:18 to go in the third quarter. 
  • The turning point of the contest was the final quarter. The game was tied at 9-9 with 15 minutes remaining, but the Bears took control of the contest and barred the Seahawks from scoring entirely while recording four goals of their own. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Moleti and Madden each recorded a hat trick with three goals apiece. 
  • Edie Threshie found the back of the net twice. 
  • Seahawk Goalie Flynn Kayajan made 18 saves while Bears' Sara Skaff had 15.
ON THE HORIZON
Next Tuesday, February 25, at 6 p.m. the Roger Williams Wildcats will host the Seahawks at 6 p.m. for Salve Regina's second game of the season.
